kids need time to be kids, they are already pushed too much to grow up. i believe that is why many children have so many problems adjusting to social situations.
for children, play time is learning time. thats how they learn to be a person, thats when they develop their personality. kids cannot be expected to act as adults, because they are not adults.
true that some schools to not have "quality" teaching staff, but compared to even 10 years ago the kids are required to know so much more now. when i was in kindergarten it was lots of play, learning ABC's, counting, colors, name, address, phone number, ect. and now children have to know all this before they are even in pre-k.
the only thing that i agree on is that the summer break is too long. i dont think they should go as much as you though, they should get about a month break, about 3 times a year instead of it all at once.

Well the school system was set up so that children could help the parents on the farm during harvest seasons, and it has just stuck.
My next response is just because students are at school does not mean that they are learning, so just by extending how many day's they go to school is not going to help.
Children are not learning because of STANDARDIZED TESTING. Teachers are teaching what is on the test, not a well rounded education basis by which they can grow.
There is also a direct link to student's being held back and the drop out rate. What this means is more crime and violence, which leads to more jail time, which leads to federal and state money being thrown down the drain. If educator were given even half of that money, then education might be closer to were it needs to be.
I can't believe that you really believe that 2 weeks vacation is enough for ANYBODY. Students and children learn outside of a classroom as well as inside. And PARENTS need to step up and take more responsibility for their children's education. Teachers have them for less than 8 hour a day....you do the math.

I think the school year is more of a tradition dating back to when kids were needed on farms to help their parents - - school happened during the slower farming months and not during the busy times.
Kids do need time to be kids, but I do agree with you that students should be held back if they are not learning.
Being a business person who only gets 2 weeks vacation as well as a student studying for my MBA in the evenings I am so thankful for summer break when it arrives.
I think a better incentive would be for kids that don't pass a class that they have to go to school for the entire summer (not just a few weeks). THAT would probably get them to work a little harder during the school year.

Shut up. Sure in the buisness minded world that is what needs to be done. But students need a break to be well KIDS. That may not be important to you but it is to many other people. Kids are getting a good education as long as the family is involed also. So get off your soap box Rightwinger and go worry about why Gerorge W is still backing NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND when more children are being left behind.

As a senior in high school I understand where you are coming from because the there are alot of idiots that somehow pass and don't know anything. Honestly I don't know how some kids pass english class when "dey type lik dis", although since I am superior to just about everybody I learn fine with getting alot of days off of school which alot of that time I spend learning about US history and current world events anyway and I learn alot more from teaching myself than I ever did in school. I do have problems in math though. The quality of school nowadays is one of the reasons that America is going down the shitter

"If they still can't move forward we should examine the quality of the teaching staff."
What about examining the efforts put forth by the student as well as the value of education that is emphasized in the home? Parents and students should also be held accountable for a child's success in their education.

You would probably have a revolt on your hands from the teachers. Teaching is basically a 24/7 job for the length of the school year. The longer vacations give the teachers a much needed break. After I left teaching, I found that I no longer needed the long vacations.

that's rather harsh. University students gets about this amount of holidays during the summer breaks, plus 6 weeks at christmas but there are exams in january and we get 3 weeks for easter, one week of that 3 weeks is reading week to catch up on reading. Tht's alot for univerity students but we love it. Sorry i just wanted to rub that in, coz u were harsh. i just graduated this summer. I think some students work hard and some are naturally gifted.
