As a pick-up driver, I feel the need to defend my brethren. They come in handy for hauling junk to the dump, bringing home Christmas trees, firewood, groceries, just about anything. Mine is a 79 Chevy and I love/hate it. It sucks gas like it was sugar-water but it keeps running and I can't get rid of it.

Pick-up trucks are fun to drive and are very practical. Usually in a truck, you are higher up off the ground and have a better view of things. I like to do yard sales and being in a truck gives me a slight advantage over those cars that are much lower. From a practical standpoint, I could put most anything, regardless of content or size, in my pick-up. I can't say the same about my car. There is a feeling of "openness" that you don't find in a typical automobile.

It's partly ego and partly cultural.

American's a simple lot. Bigger is better. The bigger your vehicle is, the better (e.g. more important) person you are. And trucks are bigger than car. It's my-toy-is-bigger-than-your-toy mentality.

And it's cultural. American's - especially in the Western States - still think of themselves as people building a new country, as people Taming the Wild West. You need a truck to move stuff. (Yep, ignore the aspect that most trucks are rarely used as work-horses, but as personal transport. The point is not what you are currently doing, it what you _could_ do that matters).

I think a lot of americans (and people in general) define themselves based on their possessions. In America, trucks have the connotaion of being tough, strong, and independent. Small cars which are best for the environment, your own wallet, and for getting around effectively (easy to park, turn, etc.) have the connotation of being wimpy and boring.

I think the government needs to enforce its miles per gallon policies and push out the huge truck companies. Unless you are some sort of construction contractor or otherwise need a truck for work I think trucks are completely illogical to own.

They might have recreational vehicles to tow like rvs or boats or jet skis. They might do a lot of home improvement or something like that and need a truck. The might just like trucks. A lot of men own them that work in construction and whatnot and use them for work. I used to own one and loved it. It was great fun and I never had to drive when my friends and I went out because I didn't have enough room for everyone.

Many Americans drive gas guzzling vehicles, they are totally selfish and don't care about the environment. They don't realise that if oil is used at the same rate that it currently is that the world will not have any left in just 40 years ! FACT Wake up America and give your fellow human beings a chance of survival.
