Take it to an Indian jeweller. They are good at that sort of thing. They can tell right away by just looking at it.

They also have a special stone on which they rub your ring and add some special chemicals to its residue on the stone and they will tell you. Takes all of some 5 minutes.

Chances are yours is 22cts. Those insignias you describe are Indian. In India they do not make jewellery that is less than 22cts because it is all handmade. Anything less than that is hard to work with. In N.America, it is 10 or 14 cts. because they are machine made. Machines cannot work with them if they are not hard. That's what 10 and 14 are.

It will feel heavy for its size in your hand but to find out the carat rating you will have to take it to a jeweller who will do an acid test on it or use an electronic tester to check. It is a simple process and the charge should be minimal but the cost of the equipment is too high to make it worth your while to buy a testing kit for just one test.

appraisal are good for nothing but insurance purposes only, yes a jeweler can put acid on it (which takes 2 sec.) and tell you exactly if its 10, 14, 18, 22, 24, my husband does this stuff every day. good luck!

if your ring is hard than it might not be 22 carats b'coz the meaning of 22carats is it contains around 88 to 90% of gold. & gold is soft by nature. so if it is harder it contains around 80% of gold so check it out!!!

on the back of my gold buddah pendant it has the symbol "18k" (engraved in small text), so i guess that's how you can tell whether it's real or fake.
