"Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb has the best guitar solo of all time" says the Yahoo! headline.

I would appreciate any ideas on how David Gilmour might have gotten his guitar tone? With what gear?

Amateurs.
He used his '79 strat with a '62 neck with Dimarzio Pickups. He had a custom switch that allowed him to turn on the neck pickup with other pickups in a customizable configuration.

The Comfortably Numb solo was taken form several different solo tracks. On those different tracks, Gilmour used a Big Muff pedal, an MXR Phase 90, and Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress, and Orange Treble/ Bass booster, and an Arbiter Fuzz Face. The exact setup on the various portions of the solo was not written down and he has been both unable and not interested in recreating the setups.

He was using Hiwatt amps and Yamaha Rotating Speaker cabinets, with the guitar going through both of those before it was recorded.

Comfortably Numb Tone

I would have said that a Fender Stratocaster and Marshall or Fender amplifiers would be your starting point. David Gilmour used a black Stratocaster throughout almost all of the 1970s and 1980s, and he famously owns a white Stratocaster with the serial number 0001 (not technically the first ever made, but as close as anyone could realistically get). Here's a couple of (hopefully) helpful links giving specifics: -
