Usually people are prejudiced of things which are unfamiliar to them, or that which they don't understand. It's a natural reaction, we're all afraid of what we don't know and understand. Fortunately, most prejudices can be overcome and eliminated by education, empathy and tolerance.

Sometimes people prejudge others which is unfortunate and this results in stereotypes. When a person begins to believe the sterotypes this turns into prejudice. As to why people are prejudice who knows. I think people are scared of what they don't know or understand.

Prejudices are one type of a cognative bias.
Cognative bias is a theory in social sciences. In a nutshell, they can be thought of as a filter in how the brain processes information.
Some common examples of cognative biases are:
Bandwagon effect (related to groupthink. People tend to do or say things because others do or think the same)
Ingroup bias (this is one of several where racism falls. This is where a person gives preferential treatment to others that the person perceives as being in the same group)
Lake Wobegon Effect (This is where a person believes themselves to be better than others and tend to overstate their accomplishments when compared to others).
Wikipedia actually has a decent article on them. it is actually kind of a nice thing to learn about if you deal with people.

People tend to orginize events into groups, and sometimes this doesnt work out for the best. If a person has a bad experiance in several different churches they will tend to hate churches in general. If they have alot of bad experiances with a certain race of people they tend to hate them. It is endless. They dont take the time to stop and think not every church or person is the same way as what happened. Or like me, I have yet to own a decnt Packard Bell PC so i tend to think of them as high priced door stops. But other people like them just fine.

I'm assuming you mean prejudice towards different cultural groups? I think that people have mild natural prejudices towards people outside there own race, after all, humans originally always lived in tribes and we have greatest understanding of others within our own culture. The multicultural environment that we are trying to attempt now, is artificial, a persons culture used to link them to their community now in our environment it seems to separate them. Also, a persons culture takes into account their morals and manners, which differ within each group. People of different groups often percieve each other as rude or each others cultures as immoral since they have different codes of conduct. Given this, of course people will become prejudice.

The desire to look for a scapegoat and resentment caused by a history of injustice..
During our life we pick up different attitudes along the way.Negative ones spoken or unspoken.
Nevertheless if prejudice can be learned it can be unlearned.

Because they have different life experiences with different things. As such they develop expectations for things. Any time a thing fulfills that expectation it helpd solidify the prejudice.

Because people are bias very easily. If we gave unconditional love to each other regardless of race, etc, we would be dogs. If we didn't care, we would be cats, but we are people. So we blame everyone else for our on faults. That is what we do best.
