If you need to watch .avi extension, i recommend you to download vlc player. It is universal player that can play all type of extension including .avi. It is free! Download it and forget about other player, this player can do all the job.

In order I recommend:
Microsoft Media Player v9: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/AllDownloads.aspx?displang=en&qstechnology=
Or Apple's Quicktime Player: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
They both are free and work on the PC with no problems.
Microsoft Media Player will work a little better on a Windows Machine, and AVI is one of Mirrosoft's Formats.
Another good product is Winamp: http://www.winamp.com/
All three can handle AVI, MPEG and many other meida formats including audio based formats
I don't recommend the REAL Player: http://realplayer.authenticdownloads.com/
Since it if full of ads and a real pain to download, but it will work as well.

DivX is the best one to get. Its legit, and you can download it free from their website.
Once you have it installed, you can view AVI files either on the DivX player, or with Windows Media Player - (it works automatically!).

you may be able to download avi films from limewire but you cant watch them without DIVX

First of all, don't even think about tryin' Limewire. Its full of Viruses and Trojans. I had a bad experience with Limewire. Once I wanted to download a simple game and had to go through a lotta problems. Try out www.4shared.com
