Check for a bad ground connection as those lights will ground themselves through any passage possible and cause just the symptoms you are describing

I agree that a bad ground is likely the cause of your problem. There is probably a 4 or 5 wire harness leading from your left taillight to the right. check to see if it has a connection in it and that it's plugged all the way in and the pins inside are clean.also, lights that are mounted in plastic housings must have a ground wire. This wire sometimes will exit the harness and be connected to the frame or bodywork under the car.follow the wire harness from the rear lights looking for a loose wire that sticks out and doesn't connect to anything

either the bulb socket have a bad ground connection or someone install the wrong bulb which has different specification.
