Does anyone else feel guilty when they call off sick to work? I only work two days a week night shift. Last night I got so sick I asked to leave halfway through my shift. I am still feeling terrible and vomiting, but I don't have a fever or any other symptoms except pain in my stomach. I have only been at this job for 10 months. To make matters worse, last week I had to call in sick because my allergies were so bad that my eyes were swelled almost shut. I saw my doctor that day because over the counter allergy meds were not working. I work in a hospital so going to work sick would not be very good for the patients. I drive my husband crazy when I'm sick and have to call off work because I analyze all day whether or not I'm REALLY too sick to be at work even though I feel horrible. I've never called off a day just because I didn't want to go and if I call off work I don't even leave my house unless I'm going to the doctor. Anyone else overwhelmed with guilt at calling in sick?

Oh definately, I don't want them to think that I am being lazy, pampered or taking advantage of them but since its only been a few days in the almost one year you have been there. They will know your personality and trust you depending on your maturity and past results. So if you always put your best foot forward they will not have those lingering bad thoughts. Hope you feel better.

I did the same thing in the past! It has taken a few years for me to learn that I am the best "predictor" of whether I feel well enough to go to work or not. I don't want people coming to work sharing their germs with me, so I give them the same respect. If you are diligent about working regularly and being tuned in while you are there, I say take care of yourself and family. That is the best anybody can do. No one will look back and comment on how often you came to work sick as a dog! Good luck and feel better!

Well you allergies and the other illness you described were probalby seen and noted by your employer. I am sure that would rather have you home getting well than infecting everyone else. IF up until now you have been reliable, then you should not have to worry.. We all get sick once in a while.

I know how you feel, however if you are Genuinley sick then you should not feel guilty. You need to rest, if you keep going and going you are only going to make things worse, or perhaps may "pass on" what you have to other co-workers. If you wake up and feel like crap that is reason enough to call in sick. Don't worry yourself, I am sure your employer understands.

nope. that's what sick days are for. just try not to use them TOO much in a short period of time, otherwise you won't have to worry about calling in sick to work, since you'll be fired.
