Dont be fooled. you can delete them from yur programs, but however they remain hidden on the hard drive. found this out after I got compromised and after getting (had to pay) the virus removed had slot some files. well I got a big surprise. I found files from the ist day I had the computer that I thought were dleted and gone.
If it is things you do n ot want others to see or know, best to replace the hard drive, BUT dont just throw it in the trash. someone may get it and it only takes some a matter of mins to get into it and get all your info.
beat it up to pieces.. nothing should be left of it.then dont throw it all out at one time play it safe.

am assuming that you are using Internet Explorer. Deleting the cookies, history and temporary Internet files is not all that you have to do.
You need to go to the content.ie5 folder under the 'Temporary Internet Files" (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\USER111\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.ie5)
You'll see a few folders and an index.dat file. Also you need to delete the index.dat file in 'C:\Documents and Settings\USER111\Cookies' folder.
To do this, you'll have to sign in as a different user delete these files off or create a script to run at startup with these folder paths to delete all files and folders.
I suggest going with former. To create a new user, right click on 'My Computer' and go to 'Manage'. In the left hand pane, go to 'Local Users and Groups' > Users. In the right hand pane, right click and hit 'New User..'
After creating user, be sure to add this user to administrators group by clicking on the 'Local Users and Groups' > 'Groups' in the left hand pane.
sign in with the new user and delete all files and folders under Cookies, Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files and Local Settings\History folders.
Good luck.

Go to Webroot.com and download Window Washer. It can permanently remove traces of your internet files and history.
Clearing your history and temp files through the browser options doesn't work. Windows maintains copies of everything on your hard drive still.

If you happen to have an HP computer, click on tools, internet options, and then under the general tab, you should see: your home page options then under the your temporary internet files options and unde that your internet history files. you have the option to delete your temporary files and cookies and the option to clear your history and set how long your computer keeps your history.

never be found.... that means, removing isn't good enough, de-magnetizing the hard disk won't work. burning won't be complete.
do all the above, then chop hard drive into little pieces, then bury each piece in a different random location.
