Well, they have, but they don't have to. The great Empires/Dynasties of history (Egypt, Rome, etc) all fell, but their leaders could have taken steps to prevent the loss. Many Empires overextend themselves militarily, thus exhausting themselves both in terms of money and manpower. That's how the Roman Empire fell to Germanic tribes from the North.

Also, the Empires of olden days were led by Emperors - one individual who could die. Once the strong and powerful individual died, so too did the Empire. However, modern "empires" (the United States, for instance) have systems of government (constitutional monarchy, republic) that don't rely on a single individual. So, if the American Empire did hypothetically fall, it wouldn't be because of a President dying.

Sometimes, though, nothing can be done. The British Empire was certainly in its prime in the early 20th Century, but after having to go through two World Wars, it was on the decline militarily and eventually fell behind America and the Soviet Union in terms of world power. However, it still exists today.

Also, this discussion depends largely on one's definition of "fall" -- Has the British Empire fallen simply because it's not as powerful as it was 100 years ago? Does an empire fall only when it's totally destroyed?

Yup. Luckily, we don't have a dynastic succession to the Presidency in this country, though with two of the past three presidents sharing the same last name, it is most certainly worrisome.

Yes, and they all fall for the same reasons: human frailty. Once we become so arrogant, greedy, selfish and self-serving that we lose our focus, we become corrupt and collapse.
The U.S.A. will be the next great dynasty to collapse, thanks to the hubris, arrogance, avarice, incompetence and corruption of the Bush administration and the sitting U.S. Congress. -RKO-
