Another Name That Movie......?

A suburbanite finally takes a much-needed week of vacation. However, he doesn't use the time to jet off to some exotic locale, there are no adventures in his plans, all he wants is a week of mindless relaxation in his own comfortable suburban home. His wife warns him that he's liable to go crazy from the boredom, but he refuses to listen. The nothingness finally does get to him, however, and he creates a little excitement for himself by spying on his neighbors, a mysterious, oddball family that just moved in to a run down home down the street. When the neighborhood grouch mysteriously disappears, he and a motley crew of other neighborhood crackpots begin to concoct wild theories about the strange, and perhaps murderous, goings on in the neighbor's creepy, old house. Name this movie???

The Burbs, 1989---

For one brief, shining moment their lives seem to have some meaning and purpose as Ray and his friends become consumed with the secrets of the bizarre family. Tom Hanks is hysterical as Ray, bring his own brand of boyish charm and zany slapstick comedy to the screen.

The 'burbs (1989), directed by Joe Dante, is a black comedy, starring, amongst others, Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, Corey Feldman, and Bruce Dern, The film pokes fun at suburban environments (particularly in the US), and their eccentric dwellers.
In his typical "good guy" mode, Hanks plays Ray Peterson, a loving family-man with an ordinary life. This changes when a mysterious family, the Klopeks, move in next door. Ray's two neighbors believe the Klopeks are actually a family of murderers who killed Walter, the old man in the next house over. Ray and the other two turn detective to solve the mystery.
The film was one of the few starring Tom Hanks that failed at the box office. However, it did establish a large cult following that still exists.
