A question about religious zealots...?

Question

D'ya think maybe it's genetics, as in lacking abstract/conceptual thinking genes. Seems genetic predispositions often have another obvious indicator - for this one, could it be an uncontrollable need to pontificate loudly?

Hmm, seems they often have trouble with complicated instructions manuals, too. Is there a corralary or is that just stereotyping?

I tend to think it's a choice, but recognize my sexual orientation and IQ aren't, so thought I'd ask. What'cha think?

Wow. Got some uptight people on here today, don't we. I never thought intelligence was about memorization and believing something without examining life for yourself, especially when you ignore so much contrary evidence. Not sure about genetics but there's something definitely not right in the head about the zealots.

PS - I get the tongue and cheek humor jab at the silly homosexuality is a choice nonsense.

These religious people who profess God's hate, come from a cult (thought it's not often acknowledged as such) that is based on fear. They teach teenagers that masturbation is a sin. Why? Because almost every teen does it, so now they hold a dirty little secret, that if discovered will condemn them, maybe to hell, but certainly away from the cult. Then they get into setting aside other behaviors that they also teach as evil. Homosexuality is a good one for this purpose, because we all know that the vast majority of any given population identifies as straight. So first point, we're different. THEN, we also know that a large percentage of those people who identify as straight have at one time or another admired a member of their own sex, checked out the other guy in the locker room, had a same-sex fantasy or dream, or even experimented with another kid when they were young. So if you set that up as sinful, now there's another dirty little secret, which if revealed, would condemn one.

So these guys (the leaders) don't even believe what they say about "The Bible says....." ; rather, they just know that by preaching of the sins of homosexuality, they can keep their cult members in check!

Hmm, it style of seems such as you're creating a number of generalizations. Atheist does not immediately equivalent religious zealot. your iq doesn't necessarily mean intelligence.
also, religious zealots aren't necessarily unintelligent. the dangerous ones are quite intelligent.
therefore, i don't think this is genetic, as you can't acquire such beliefs as a fetus. you can, however, be raised a certain way and made to believe things that aren't true, or you can decide your own beliefs at a later point in life.
