been at work and the employees are supposed to collaborate and work as a team but only the best employee is rewarded for the teams effort???

Happens all to often. When it happens to me where I am rewarded then I make sure I tell the boss in front of the others that I could not of done it without so and so, and go on to make sure they get recognized too. I figure this may rub off on them a little for when it happens to them and they may do the same.

WOW. That would set up an internal competitive environment, which I think would be detrimental to the team development inside this company.
Sounds like a pretty irrational strategy to me.
