Now i'm a Die-Hard yankee fan i mean down to defending A-Rod b/c he's still part of the Dream Team of baseball but Mariano Rivera has #42(no name of course) but how can that be if they retired Jackie Robinson's # across the MLB?

Because Mo had the # before it was Officially retired from baseball. The rule states no one, not currently wearing the #42 on the date it was officially retired, can wear it going forward.

So once Mo (his # will be retired by the Yankees anyway) is done with it, no one else will have that # in baseball.

But Mo had it, prior to the # being retired around MLB.

Rivera had the number 42 prior to the league-wide retirement of the number, and was grandfathered in. Once he retires, no other player in the Major Leagues will ever don the number 42 again.

Those who were wearing number 42 at the time of its retirement were allowed to keep wearing it for the duration of their careers. Rivera is the only player still active from April 15, 1997. Once he retires, it will go "into the rafters."

All current players wearing #42 when it was retired were allowed to continue wearing it. If that player were to go to another team, they would not be allowed to wear it. Mo is the last player in the league to wear #42 and will do so until his Yankee career ends.

Mariano was given permission to wear #42 by Jackies widow Rachel. She told him to continue wearing the number until he retires.

It was grandfathered--meaning any major leaguers who wore #42 at the time major league baseball retired Robinson's number were allowed to keep it. Butch Huskey and Mo Vaughn are other players who continued to wear 42.
