I just had to chime in because there are so many incorrect answers on here. LOL. Sometimes I wonder if people answer incorrectly on purpose ... ToiletDuck is the only one who is correct in answering this question. Everyone else who answered is stoned.

A university is made up of colleges. Some schools began as mere colleges, but they later became universities. Many of them retained the name "college" even though they are more than just a college.

And research isn't a factor. There are around 200 research universities in this country, some private and some public. But a university doesn't have to be an actual research institute to have the title of university.

In general, colleges focus mostly on educating undergraduate students. Universities educate both undergrads and graduate students, and thus have as much or more of an emphasis on research as they do on teaching.

Some colleges offer a limited number of Master's degrees. For example, Sarah Lawrence College does offer an MS in creative writing. However, most only offer a few.

All universties offer degrees up through and including the PhD, often in a wide variety of subjects.

It's usually the case that a college will be smaller in number of students than a university, but that's not always true.

The difference between a college and a university is that a college just offers a collection of degrees in one specific area, while a university is a collection of colleges. When you go to a university you are going to be graduating from one of their colleges, such as the business college. As to which is better, it depends on what you want. Single colleges tend to be smaller while universities are bigger, but universities are better known.

Universities are public (usually), and colleges are private (for the most part).

Technically there are certain academic qualifications in order to be a Uninversity. One of these is that you have active research going on.

BUT...there is no law about this so there are many "Universities" that technically are not universities.
