It is absolutely fine. In some cases prem babies may suffer from either physical or mental developmental delays, but in a majority of cases they have caught up with other kids their age by 2 years old (this is a normal catch up window that health professionals allow prem babies). I was only 4lbs when born at term, but I have never had any developmental problems and would say that I'm definitely not stupid as I have 2 Bsc Honours degrees in community nursing and public health nursing (PS - its part of my job to know about premature babies and their development as I carry out child health and child development clinics).

As for anyone who suggests you are stupid because you were born early, just ignre them. Perhaps they're just jealous cos they're completely thick and were born on time???? Maybe they' like to have an excuse.

My oldest little girl was born weighing 3lbs 13oz. She was only six weeks preemie, but had stopped growing at 31 weeks gestation (9 weeks early) due to something called Intrauterine Growth Retardation. It has nothing to do with actually being retarded, just that the conditions inside the uterus were not letting her grow normally. Anyway, she is almost four now. She is not only in the 95th precentile for height and weight, she is the smartest kid in her preschool. (And I'm not just saying that because she is mine!)

my cousin was a preemie and she has her bachelor's degree in Engineering. preemies are born everyday and they grow up to be healthy and intelligent people. the people you talk to are young, immature, and they are stupid. tell them to watch the news, TLC, and read a biology book. it is not your fault that you were 2lbs. they should be saying that is a miracle that you survived and are here today to tell your story. there are a lot of ignorant people in this world but this is part of life.

You were very small for an 8 week preemie, although being a preemie means nothing about how smart you'll be

ther are tons of babies who are born premature....you and your family are extremely lucky you did so well, sometimes with premature births the babies do end up with physical as well as mental problems, but it sounds to me like you are one of the lucky ones.......keep up the good work (honor roll)

that is pretty small and I thought that it was bad for babies to be born less than 5lbs( i was 4 something) but anyway I don't make fun of them.
