I can see it now....a black garbage bag that is just loose and hideous.
So....
If it has sleeves, butterfly them if possible by cutting the ends, and splitting up the sides. Flutter is in and comfy.
Create a sexy neckline by going V-neck. Plunge it far enough to stand out and be eye-catching, but not too low or it will be inappropriate.
After the V-neck, take other fabric a sew a tight fitting sash on in a babydoll under the breasts fashion. This will tighten it up top and then on the bottom, let the dress flow so that is is even and can twirl. If you want, make a sharkbite hem, but keep it loose after the neckline and sash.
End the dress right below the knee.
Now, a sexy little black dress with a sash (color, black or METALLIC) and the right heels will be perfect for a night out on the town!
Good Luck and I hope you can make the dress into something you'll love!

Why not get a pattern to make a smaller, more fashionable dress, and use some of the excess fabric to make a purse to match.

Make it into a skirt. Or into a two piece skirt and shirt. If possible make the top piece of the dress into a strapless corset that laces up in the back or on the sides.

since it's fat, if you're not really that fat.. make it "skinier".

put a belt at the waist... and then puff some off the fabric over your belt a bit

or on the bottom half split the sides open

long sleeves? take off the sewing on the outer side (if there is) and then resew it at intervals, so there are openings on the sleeve

Make it into another dress and put sequence on it. Yes do a matching purse if you want to. Ooh maybe even a scarf, cape or gloves.

Instead of a big, fat long black dress, why not make a "little black dress".

Little black dresses are timeless.
