at the end of the interview after i gave the range 35-45, he said the offer will surely be closer to the top number, so i was expecting something around 41-43k. He volunteered that info.

They just offered 38k yr and asked me to get back today with my concerns.

Im interested in the wording of my counteroffer, any help?,
Industry base in my area is 45-47k, i have the experience and education to warrant it.

What do i say or write to begin the counter.

...back with your concerns? Sounds like they are expecting a counter offer.

How about something like this...

Thank you for your offer letter dated (date). I am excited to be a part of (company) and specifically joining the (team) to help assure continued success.

WIth my experience of (years, tasks), I feel that my salary request of $42k is fair. Although I appreciate your initial salary offer of $38k, I'm sure that you will see the added value of having my level of experience on your team.

I look forward to your response. Thank you again for your consideration. I hope that we can work through this final hurdle so that I can become productive as soon as possible (or by date)

You may have to be bold with this one.

They gave you an offer meaning that they like you, that's a good thing to keep in mind.

I'd let them know that you're interested in the position (that you like them too) but hoped for a higher salary based on industry standards and your own experience and education. Let them know again of what you can bring to the company and say with a range of 35-45k, you expected something higher.

Then maybe ask them, is this something you could consider and possibly get back to me on?

Try to keep the conversation open

And maybe you could take the 38k and ask them if they could do a 3 month salary review. Let them know what you're aiming for.

I am excited about the opportunity to work with your company and look forward to being a valuable member of the team. While your offer of $38k seems fair, based on my research of similar positions in the industry and my anticipated costs of living, I would like to propose that the compensation be revised to $41k per year. I belive that I hjave demonstrated the requisite skills to not only perform this job but to excel...blah blah...

Basically, you need to acknowledge their offer anbd state why you think it should be revised upwards..cite similar positions in the industry, your level of experoence/skills etc...good luck!

Your first problem was giving them that big of a range to work with. Your salary range should only be 2-3K. I would say something like "I appreciate the generous offer, however I feel that compensation should be more indicative of my education and experience...etc, etc...."

You are stuck. You gave the range. You would look pretty silly going back now and saying " Hey I know I told you I would work for 35, but I lied." From the employers perspective they are giving you more than what you asked becasue they are always going to consider your bottom in the range, not the top.

Now you could make an attempt, but don't be surprised if they hold firm.
