Global hooks, are they pre-infection of the rootkit or post-infection? If they can exist on any writable storage media: How many types of the WSM is there on my computer built in; How do I sanatize in this instance; How many of the WSM are long term vs. flushed per reboot? If I make backups of important files, like copying to CD, will the rootkit copy itself with the backup files?

Suggest, first you disable System Restore until you get all of this resolved. Then after shutting down computer and waiting a couple of minutes, you could restart and re-enable your System Restore feature.

Do not download and install "free" software, if it is not "open source".
Do not download "free" music, if it is not released under a "Creative Commons" license.
Do not buy CD's that have copy protection.
