Being someone who had an entire "black" load when doing laundry, I can answer that because I've heard it all.
In California, people thought I was a witch.
When I moved to the south, my church would tell me I needed to get over that. They think it has the appearance of evil.
Now (still in the south) I have a pastor who loves to wear black, too.
I think a lot of it has to do with biology, actually, and this is what people don't understand. I think it runs parallel to people who like dark clouds and rainy weather. Others call it dreary, but I love it. It makes me giddy. Sunny weather is much more likely to make me depressed. It drains the life right out of me. However, most people say that rainy weather is depressing and I can see how they would think that anyone who thought otherwise was a dreary person.
Similarly, people often say that if someone is depressed, they should be put in a room with pastelly colors like yellow or something. However, if you put someone like me in a yellow room, that is actually more likely to make me depressed.
Black can be comforting, like a sort of blanket.
People just don't understand that there is a difference there.

I wear some form of black every day to work (usually in the form of pants or a skirt) and I'm never criticized.
I can see why some people would criticize if the person or people in question wore black from head to toe, had very unnaturally dyed black hair, black fingernails, pasty white skin, black lipstick, etc. That's just weird looking. Not that the people themselves are weird--but the look is.

Nobody criticizes me for frequently wearing black (although it's not head-to-toe; I usually wear blue jeans). For me, it's a matter of style - if I look best in a black turtleneck, how often should I wear something in which I don't look my best? Of course, I do make an exception for hot weather, although I hang onto my long-sleeved turtlenecks just up until about 70°F (but I do have a few s/s ones for the summer).
However, I am inclined to criticize people who capitalize every word in a sentence/question...

Those are the kind of people that you need to learn to ignore. You will probably have lots of practice to do so throughout your life. If you're not someone who just goes along with what's popular, you will be critized.

Some people think that people who wear black are pitiable and depressed, weak, because black usually represents sadness. But well, not everyone criticises people who wear black. And it's just a shade of colour anyway, no big deal really.

wearing black is elegant unless you mean black as in black listick and eyeliner and nailpolish then you are talking gothic and if you dress like that you are making a statement and you don't really care what some one says about it - you do it to be different - you stand out. so there wear black in all its glory

Aghh..you just have to not care! Wear whatever you want, if they care they have no life and aren't worth your time, anyway.
That being said, I wear a lot of black because I LIKE IT and it coordinates well.

That is absurd. Why would anyone care what color of clothes you wear? Tell them to GET A LIFE.
