Linguistics is the study of nature and structure of human speech. Etymology is the study of origin of words. Philology is historical linguistics. And Phonetics deals with the system of sounds of a particular language.

There is a need for an international language with mathematical precision, Russell did some work on this idea, but it probably didn't work out.
