Is this the book by Peter Dickinson where a girl becomes a chimp??? I read that book about eight or nine years ago which is much too long to be of any useful help to you for this possible assignment. But I would think one of the most important events is when she decides to live as a chimp and really 'abandon' in a way her former life and family and embrace her new self.
