Try Salvation Army, not the thrift store, the organization. Look it up in the phone book and see if they have a store credit or voucher that you could use for your son.
I don't know about your specific area but there are many, many charities and churches that help with buying school clothes for kids. Newspapers often have information about these groups so you could contact your local paper.
Some stores (Wal Mart, etc.), I believe, have programs where you can go in and select school outfits at their stores. You would have to prove your income, of course, but it wouldn't hurt to check this out and see if they have this kind of program.

Try an organization called "freecycle". There is also "cheap cycle". They are located in the Yahoo! Groups section. Just find the one for your area. People are always giving away free clothes. You can also try a lending closet or church. There's always someone to help.

Churches have clothes drives and donations brought in by kindly folks to help out folks just like you. Call or visit the churches to find out where they have clothing/food dropoff depots.
