I saw a tv documentary not long ago about people who work graveyard shifts (the thankless shift). It was interesting to note that since humans are not nocturnal, staying awake during the am hours goes against our biological clocks, and the way nature intended for our bodies. Our bodies take in less oxygen at night and they said 4 am is the peak time for fatigue.
I would think you are doing much damage to your body by not sleeping during the day. I have friends who work that shift - they are always tired and sleepy and never feel rested..sad to say. But, one of them stays up until 2 pm, then goes to bed until time to get up for work. I'm sure it takes time to get adjusted to even that.
I would do some research on the subject to see what you can do to help, but if you can ever get back to a day job, you might be glad you did.

Even though caffeine and sugar can help,it's only a temporary fix. And it'll make you more tired when you come down from the caff/sugar buzz... Try vitamin B, all the B's. They're the energy givers in the body. Also you can try to space out the coffee. Have one or two an hour. That way the overall effect isn't MAJOR caffeine, then nothing. That kind of roller coaster can really make you sick. Also eat veggies, broccoli is good. Gives your body something to do, your hands something to do and it gives vitamins... All stuff to help keep you awake.

DO NOT EAT SWEETS. Sugar will give you a TEMPORARY high followed by a downer lower than before. Learn about how insulin is pumped into the blood to offset the sugar. Insulin always over reacts. Go to the restroom and wash your face and arms with cold water. Someone mentioned caffeine pills.Though I am against drugs and such, in this case it might be a good idea.

Forget the pills. The next time your body is in overdrive, take one one per day vitamin tablet with amino acids and keep a bottle of water nearby. As you are about to nod, wash your face or sprinkle water in your eyes. Do not deprive your body of rest unless it is an emergency.

Toothpicks? to prop open the eyes helps.
Just kidding.
Can you listen to some heavy metal, or hard rock music?
Stay "chilly", not too warm.
You have to be young. Use will power. You can draw on it. I have many times, still can, and I'm old.
Make "strong" coffee, you won't drink as much.

You need to schedule your "things to do" for days off so you can get enough sleep
Can you walk around or talk to other people to stay awake?
