Illinois. Metropolis is DC's version of Chicago, like Gotham is New York City.

He lives in Metropolis, whose locations vary depending of which interpretation of Superman's universe you're talking about--in the comics and the movies, Metropolis is located on the East Coast (exactly where has changed over time--from pretty much where New York is, to somewhere around Dover, Delaware). In "Smallville" the TV series, however, Metropolis is within driving distance of Smallville, Kansas, and is probably in Kansas itself.
Metropolis, Illinois bears the same name by coincidence, and the citizens of the town decided to take advantage of the coincidence by proclaiming the town "the home of Superman" and fashioning the town into a Superman-themed tourist trap.

Metropolis,Illinois. They have a big celebration every year around the 1st part of june. Big statute & Daily Planet news paper also. Ask Merv Griffin he built Hotel & casino there too.

Generally thought to be in NY or Ill, but I always thought it'd be cool to make it California to play off the east coast vs. west coast thing to contrast it even further with Gotham.
