I reckon seven and there are quite few ways to do it but if you want to cheat try Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota and Minnesota. That takes you to the Great Lakes and you drive on the ferry and go down the St Lawrence Freeway until you meet the Atlantic. Not exactly East Coast but then you could land on any of the states there if you wanted and make it six.

A lot depends on both the starting point and the ending point, but it appears to be 8.
Although technically, you could start in Maine, cut through Canada and end up in Washington State for 2.
