The best way is to start playing music right away. Equipment, style, etc...is unimportant. But, playing actually music is critical. So, yes getting copies of music from the internet and learning to play your favorite songs is the way to go. But you have to have some basic knowledge so that you can interpet the chord chart or sheet music. Thats where scales and chords come in.

Now, once you get beyond the basic then theory and scales become much more important. For now, just learn how to play a few songs.

Oh, and I'm sorry metal guy above me, but telling a begginer to tune there guitar by ear and without a tuner is good way to ensure that the persons ear never develops. Get a tuner and a metronome and use them.....always!

I'm self taught and a quite capable guitarist. Playing with others is a great way to learn and advance your knowledge of the instrument. You wanna play punk, hardcore, etc? Ditch the accoustic for starters. Make certain you know how to tune the guitar and if it's tough for ya, then buy a tuner. Learn what notes are where, exclusively, on the fifth and sixth strings (the thickest two). Find the section of your book, or another, that teaches barre chords. These are chords formed in movable shapes and they are very easy to work with being as the only thing really changing in order to produce a different chord, is moving to a different fret. Green Day, as well as countless others, use these "barre chords" when they play. Most importantly, get with your friends and get things rolling! You can all contribute to one anothers learning experiences and grow together. As you broaden your musical tastes through the years, continue to broaden your knowledge of the guitar by working scales, modes, and the many many different forms that chords can take, as well as the various voicings of chords, etc., to get your desired sound. Tweak your tone, go to the guitar shop and play through some different amps. Try out some different effects, and pick up some toys! Have fun with it! Get out in front of people! Play loud! Thats what it's about.

yeah!! scales and chords are the best way to learn guitar. I m a lead guitarist. Play the scales and arpegeose very slowely and practise them for hours again and again and try to play all the chords very clearly, the sound of each string must be loud and clear. Never go to playing very fast cauz u have to make everything clear in proper timing. U should also play the origanal musical notations not only the tabs. u r saying that u have a book of sclaes. thats awesome. keep playing the scales from that book. and search for pentatonic, chromatic, major minor harmonic, melodic etc. And try to tune ur guitar urself with the help on only ur ears NO tuner, and also try to play the songs of as u like green day urself without looking at the tabs. If u have any problem in playing scales and, Tuning ur guitar or in anything in music feel free to IM me or send me a mail anytime!!!

It's according to what kind of guitar player you want to be. Do you want to master the guitar? You'll need a teacher to teach you properly the scales and modes.
There are certain things you need to know about theory.
If you just want to play in a punk band, you can be a master and play but you can also be a novice.
Books are ok but I would prefer a mentor who's been there. Get bandmates who are at the same level. Go see bands and see what they do along with your mates. If you are playing punk but only the chords, you don't have to know the scales and modes that much. A chord can consist of only the 1st and 5th note of the scale as a chord. For instance: A on the 5th fret 6th string and E on the 7th fret 5th string. Move that around.

Some long sheet music books have chord instructions like for beginners, etc. For a punk band, you should get sheet music from your favorite artist. I had to start with an accoustic guitar too, so it does help A LOT! Good luck with the punk band.

HI Scales are good to learn in that they help you famliarise yourself with the notes around the neck of the guitar, as you become more proficient with practice, you can then improvise and
be more creative. I for one play classical guitar and i'm self taught
I played electric before but I switched to the classical because it's
more complex and challenging and not easy. but you can also get
music sheets of your favorite punk artist and learn to play their
songs also whether they are in tablature form or not.

Go to http://ultimate-guitar.com/ and print out tabs of songs that you like the style of, learn them completely.

It is better to start off on the acoustic, as you have, and learn your basic chords, and pentatonic scales. When you feel comfortable that you have mastered that, switch over to electric.

Also play to a metronome to make sure you are on beat.
