Its disease, culture, and the legal system.
You can get bacteria, fungus, and other foot stuff that you cant lose. Some people lose toenails to them, others get chronic athletes foot.
With tuberculosis it became essential to cough or sneeze into a hankerchief. Before that it wasnt culturally normative, but with that lethal disease, the health-wise thing was to keep others from catching your disease. It was wierd to people, but they did it to stay alive, and to keep others alive. Then cures were found, and the requirement to keep the hankerchief slowly decayed.
Its very like that with feet. There are all sorts of weak cures that are really breeding very resistant foot funk.
Oh yeah, and if you step on glass while in the store they are legally liable, and they know it. If they post & say no bare feet, and you get cut, its your own dumb fault and they arent out $40,000 to talk to a lawyer, and however much more to fight your lawyer in court. They have to do it because of lawsuit liability.

Conditioning! There are no hygiene or moral issues involved. If anything, it's possibly an insurance liability reason. It's the same reasoning as people who go to church twice a year, but have to buy that new easter outfit to fit in with the group for a day.
Next time you are in line at a buffet or cafeteria, Take the top tray look at it kind of funny like, then put it back and take the one underneath. Then look back and watch the others do the same thing. Social suggestion leading to conditioning.
I have wondered because I've been guilty of same. Why do people associate in large groups and call themselves non conformists. Like tatoos. How can you be BASICALLY different if you are conforming to the same thing every one else is doing. It's like let's all do the same thing and then call ourselves non conformists.
If you don't want to wear shoes, then don't. (just watch out for sharp objects). Then you will be a true non conformist.Doing what you want with no harm to others, nor caring what they think! Does this make any sense at all?

Get a microscope and put it close to the ground in your house. Next take it outside and look at your driveway. When you see how many germs are there in guarded spaces, either take a guess or look at a public walkway and you will see why walking barefoot is not healthy. On beaches--the stimulation is good for you because there is a direct connection between pressure points of your foot and your major organs. The upward/downward application of pressure from the fine particles of sand helps circulation.

Ewwweeee!!! I too love to be barefoot too, but would never consider walking into a Walrmart, never mind a Walmart bathroom, barefoot. Just the thought of urine on the floor, crud from the bottom of peoples shoes, gum. Yuck. Too each their own though.

I don't think it's wrong to walk around with bare feet but it appears we are in the minority opinion. From a health and safety standpoint it probably isn't a good idea in the city. If someone leaves broken glass or sharp metal in the parking lot or on the store floor you risk infections or worse if you step on it. The store probably doesn't want to be sued :)

Going barefoot saves on shoe leather for sure. I used to play in my grandfathers woods barefoot and hated having to put shoes on, however many people look at barefoot people as being too poor to afford shoes, and shopping at walmart puts you right into that catagory....lol

Because people spit and throw up on the ground. And then you walk in it. That's gross! Plus, you can catch HPV and get feet warts. Put flip flops on... nasty!
