Having lived in MA for most of my life, not too far from Boston, I can say that you'd love it. It's old, historic, interesting, many ethnic neighborhoods, cultural, political, yet, new and exciting. There is always something happening in the city, lots of things to do and see, lots of festivals, great restaurants and hotels.
OF course, anyone interested in sports would find a lot to do with the Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics. Fenway Park and the Fleet Center.
Close to everything with public transportation available; you can walk and bike everywhere. Public parks, Boston Common, the waterfront, museums of Art and Science, the Aquarium, the State House, Beacon Hill, and great shopping.
What's not to like?
I've talked to many people who have visited and some who lived there for a period of time and I've never heard anything BAD about it.(except for maybe the traffic and the crazy drivers and the problems with the BIG DIG) Just across the river you have
Cambridge and many interests and restaurants there.
It's central to interesting points North...follow the coast road (Rte.1A) all the way to Maine. Beautiful, Or go South to the CApe Cod area.
If you go, you won't be sorry.

It's awesome and a very youthful spirited town as it does have the largest college population in the world there.
I loved the size and the ability to walk across the city if I chose to. I was able to bike just about anywhere. The T (subway) can reach almost anywhere too!
I loved the history including the Boston Common, Boston Harbor, Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, USS Constitution, JFK Library, plus a short drive to Salem, or Plymouth.
You had the Red Sox, so you could get tickets to see your team beat them. That was fun, at least until they won some games on year and now all the fair weathered fans are out there en masse. (Off topic, but I used to be able to walk up to the ticket booth, year after year after year and get my tickets for right behind the dugout for almost every game I wanted to see. Now, the "fans" are out there snatching up the tickets like if they were there all along. GIVE ME A BREAK. Having lived there for many years, I can say Boston (not unlike other cities) has A LOT of fairweathered fans)
Ok, back to what I like. I love the seafood. No Names, chart house, Durgin Park.
I love the ice cream. Boston's home to the mix in parlors like Steves. It's home to many other knockoffs as well now too!
That's a start, but should give you a flavor!
Hope you have a great time! And if you are here for a year, be sure to do some other travelling to other parts of the states (NY, Wash DC, etc). There's a lot of great places to see!

I'm sure you'd love it. I've always lived close to Boston, and there's just so much to do. Walk the Freedom Trail, see the Old Ships, shopping, eating, Science Museum, take a Duck Tour, go to Fanueil Hall, Harvard Square, the North End. . .the list can go on!

Excellent choice! Boston is one of the great American cities. It has the vibrance and energy of a big city, with the charm of a small town. A mixture of old and new. Rich in history and culture. Bostonians are a colorful people. Lots to do and see.
