My friend and I want to make custom cuff lnks for her husband for his birthday. Tod do so we wanted to solder a finding (the cuff link back) to a custom piece of faux jewelry. We used a soldering iron, but that took to long to get hot and didn't give enough heat to keep the solder molten. Do I need to use a propane torch? Or what exactly do we need to do? Thanks

You may need to invest in a better quality soldering iron. A really good one gets hot fast and will keep the solder molten. But since you don't say what kind of iron you got it's hard to really say for sure. But a propane torch is a bit overmuch for the job.
