You can expect something to be either good or bad. It's simply assuming that what think will happen will actually occur.
Hope, whether in God or not, carries with it a connotation of the positive. When you "hope" something will happen, it is usually something good that you want to see occur.
Hope in God goes even further and assumes that God will have something to do with the good thing that you want to have happen.

Hope in God is something positive... you hope that things will go well, you hope that you will be blessed, you hope that you are good enough. since Hope is not absolute (ie, you are not Guaranteed to get what u hope for), it is something positive, but not Certain. which is ok...hope is the start of SOMETHING.
Expectations are different because it is absolute: either you Succeed, or you Fail. either u get what u are expecting, or you are disappointed. if you expect God to give you something, and u don't get it, already you are going to be upset, sad, angry. u are putting urself in the position of getting hurt, because u can never know what God has in store for you. instead of giving that chance that it might not be the same as what you wanted, u are Expecting a black or white answer. that is neither right or fair, because as Humans we will never know what is Truly good for us. for example, maybe it's Better for you to be poor in your youth, *so that* u can appreciate more later what being rich can mean. but at the time of being poor, if u expect God to give u riches and u don't get it, all u get is sourness, despair, hurt and anger.
without Hope that things can change, you are stuck in negativity, in nothingness. the fact that there is Always hope to change things, even if u can't see it, is so important. Hope is always a Positive thing, Expecations can be positive or negative, and usually when u have expectations that are not met, they are always going to turn into negativity. when u expect ur child to become a doctor and they don't, u begin to resent. but when u Hope ur child will be a doctor and they change their mind, u are not as disappointed.
hope that makes sense to u!! :)

Hope in God is about your faith and belief in God. Whereas expectation is more about standards and what a particular outcome is supposed to be based on some sort of set guidlines.
For example, from religious teachings and upbringings you may be taught that what God has destined for you, you cannot change. Or as some people says 'I leave it in the hands of God'. That is about faith/hope in God.

I don't think there should be expectations here on earth. I think we should have (if you're saved by Jesus) the expectation of Heaven, but on earth we should always be thankful for what God gives us. Myself included, we can all get caught up in the gripes of daily life, but things could ALWAYS be worse, so any little thing we might not think too much on that happens that is nice, we should thank the Lord. Blessings have a tendency to come your way when you do also. :)

you shouldnt expect anything from God accept love and forgivness. Expectation is when you expect that something will go right if you ask.
Hope is more powerful and less disapointing if you keep saying that this may or may not happen.

This is how I see it:
Hope in God is about what you NEED. God will provide all your needs.
Expectation is about what you WANT. And since when do some people know what they want, anyway?
