Gone with the wind's message was fight or die. Three groups were fighting or dying during the civil war. The men went to fight, not just some men, all men. An entire generation of men died, thus leaving an entire generation of women alone. Women had to fight or die, it was there jobs to provide one another companionship, food, housing, money, etc. Lastly of course the struggle existed for black america. Those who were enslaved faced no brighter a future after fighting had commenced then before. Greed and profit led to the concept to fight or die.
Love to hear what the askers thoughts are on the "message"

Was there a message??? I have watched this movie over and over and over. I would say the movie is about Scarlet, although there are numerous sub plots. I love to watch how she adapts to her environment throughout the seasons, through war, famine, hardship...she was so strong and so proud, yet it was her idealistic memories of Ashley and the old south that robbed her of having a wonderful life with Rhett

it was about the South.... the death of an innocent time, generation of people, good or bad, having to undergo a HUGE change in what they were used to. for good or for bad, they HAD to change, and many people died for what they were fighting for.
i think the message was about strength; the ability and the need to do what u have to do in order to survive; fight or die. scarlett was the epitome of someone who was not always good, nor bad, but STRONG. chose the choices she did with one thing in mind; to save and keep her land, Tara. she hurt people, used people, in order to do what she felt was Noble and her purpose in life. to preserve the home she grew up in, where her father and mother died. some people hate scarlett, some people love her, but everyone can respect what her intentions and final motives were. that doesn't mean she deserved Rhett; she didnt', which was why he left. and i think the end shows that all she needed was to be strong in her faith in Rhett, and she could've had EVERYTHING, but thru all her strength, she was weak in her ability to Love and Be Loved. to allow another partner, person into her life as an Equal, not subordinate. she will be able to go on, but she lost a lot of things in the process....
