Since this question is in the "Education & Reference" area I presume you are asking about 101 as a number that follows a class description. The first digit siginifies first year or beginning level of information. All 100 courses are freshman level classes. 200 courses are courses at the 2nd level. Usually 200, 300 and 400 courses require previous course completion in order to enroll. The last 2 digits signify various things. Odd #'s are first semester courses and even # are second semester offerings. The higher the number, the higher degree of previous knowledge is required.

A 101 course is the entry level. a course with 202 would be a second semester course at the sophomore level that is designed for students with previous course experience in that particular field of study.

It is stated to be a number. Its simplest meaning is the number of elements in a set. The problem is that the base is not specified.

If your numbers are base ten then 101 means there are one hundred and one elements in some set.

If your numbers are base two then 101 means 4+0+1 = 5. there are 5 elements in your set.

For it to have other meaning, context must be provided.
Its a prime number. Its the square root of 10201.
Its the sum of two squares: 10^2 and 1^2
It factors to 2*2*5*5+1

If you want to know what it means with respect to something else then you should specify it. It can be a count of something, and the historical or legendary value of that something can be associated with the number. Consider 600 + 60 + 6, the biblical number of the beast. Its a word in ancient hebrew for babylon in the encryption systems common in ancient hebrew. The terror associated with the beast, the antichrist, armageddon and the end of the world has been associated with this set size. The latin shape of the character for the set of six elements was vi, so in latin the six hundred, sixty, and six looks radically different and had radically different cultural meaning from the current cream-puff ignorant fearers of the sequence of characters: 666.

The set size, or characters used have adopted the culturally christian values associated with the end of the world. Thats not intrinsic to the set, but the culture around it. If you are looking for the associated meaning, the cultural baggage around 101, then you should provide enough context for the culture to be determined.

In current american it refers to education, and is associated with the absolutely most basic course in a field. Example: "You should have learned that in hacking 101".

It means one hundred and one of something.

Or, do you mean to use it as: "Math 101"? If so, it means the very basic of something. Math 101 would be the first college class you take in that subject, so the term is often used to mean the easiest level of that subject.
