The sms system is store and forward type.it means every sms you send will be stored in the sms server for the time fixed by the operator and delivered to the receiver. The status of a mobile station is updated every time whenever the user enters a new zone or switches on/off his mobile phone.According to the status if the phone has been switched off the server tries repeatedly in every 5 or 10 minutes to send the message. This time interval increses every time the server gets a negative reply with the maximum no. of tries or maximium time a msg resides in a server fixed by the operator depending upon the traffic.usually this is 24 hours.

Ya,it remains with the service provider for the meantime and is forwarded when the mobile is switched on .As you may know all the messages and calls get connected to the recipient through the service provider .However a message will be held up only for a limited time ,usually 24 hrs .

Your SMS is stored with your mobile operator, when the phone is turned on, it signals the operator that its ready to receive your SMS- thats when it gets transferred. It also depends on the validity duration you set for your SMS.
