O/D will not stay engaged after shifting into O/D... Car wasn't driven for 18 months at 24,000. Approx 1 year ago. Fluid is red, doesn't smell bad. Driving down freeway one day and it disengaged and hasn't worked since. Maybe 300 miles ago...

The transmission in your car (AOD) was notorious for having O/D problems. Usually the band for O/D fails and then it will feel like neutral when it makes a 3-4 shift. Only way to fix it is an overhaul.

There is a cable that goes from your trans to your throttle actuator on injector system---the cable holder at the engine end has a bad habit of breaking and causing this problem along with strange shifting of the other gears if this is your problem attend to it immediately for it will trash your trans quickly! If this isn't it there is a good chance you are looking at a rebuild.
