It takes eight years of school. Four years of undergraduate work in anything really, but numerous required prerequisites in Biology, organic and general chemistry, math, and physics. Then four years at medical school. Then from 2 to 7 years of residency training afterwards. The investment is anywhere from 10 to 17 years of your life, and roughly 200,000 to 250,000 in debt. You need to have excellent grades as an undergraduate, and score well on the MCAT, and USMLE board exams.

It's a huge commitment of your life, and not something you can just go 'do.' It takes years and years of work.

Most undergraduate medical courses run for approx 6 years. You would apply straight from secondary education.

Most postgraduate medical courses run for 4 years but require a previous 4 years of study in another degree.

Many doctors become writers. The most recent and famous fellow is Michael Crighton who has written many best sellers and writes for "ER".

Anton Chekhov was both a writer and a doctor, and he had tuberculosis and a clinging, worthless family to support. But then, he was a very great man.
