Parkways as a rule have more on and off ramps and for getting around in a smaller area, turnpikes are the closet thing to an autobahn we have in the US. They have few on and offramps, tolls always, and go longer distances.
Or it could just be that they liked that name more.

I don't know about the Garden State Parkway but turnpikes usually charge a toll to use them

A Turnpike is a toll road. A Parkway is a wide road with grass and trees often with a grassy median.

A Turnpike is, specifically, a toll road. "Parkway" can be used to describe any kind of large highway.
