A Canadian can be in the US for as long as 6 months, after which, you cannot return again for 6-12 months. If you stay for a lesser time, then the requirement being out of the US does not apply.

During that time, you cannot work (legally). Also, when you enter the US, you will need to show proof of financial resources for whatever period of time you declare you will be staying.

Sometimes, the US will issue a Visitors Visa, even to a Canadian, when the stay is going to be several months. Not usually, but it does happen at times. Then you have to stop and "check out" of the US on your way back to Canada.

Seriously? I"m Canadian, and thinking about heading to the states for an extended visit... And possibly moving there... But I am a total "Proud To Be" Canadian... And would prefer dual-citizenship... but the terms are impossible!
With an average of 60 asians a day moving into toronto canada, i can understand why their so tough.

With our immigration system as screwed up as it is, you can probably stay here forever. They don't know where 20 million illegal Mexican Aliens are, despite the fact that they're standing in large numbers, on every street corner in small and large cities throughout the U.S. When they're not standing they're marching in demonstrations by the 100 thousands. Of course if you're not Mexican they'll probably catch and deport you. Can't have too many of you Non-Hispanics hanging around, you know? Our American President Vincente Fox wouldn't like that.
