I'm from Minnesota and it is a bit late. But, there are plants you can plant now and will last until the first frost (around late October or so). Check your local garden/nurseries. They can give you some ideas what you can plant now to enjoy and what you can get started on for next year.

Here in New York, it's a bit late to plant this year's garden (which I assume is outdoors). On the other hand, if you're only planting a box or two that can be moved inside for the winter, go for it.

I'm in Houston TX - and this is the time to begin planting some of the hardier veggies - such as squash, pumpkins.
If you are in the central areas - like North Carolina, Tennessee - harvest time is either around the corner or gone - but a great time for planting some fall plants (mums)... and preparing the ground for next year.

By the way, when you plant the mums - cut them back once colder weather sets in - and put some mulch down over the winter, to keep them warm - so they can come back up for spring time.
Also, consider this a time replanting, or moving Peonies - so they can establish some roots before they freeze
-cover them up so they can be ready for spring blooms.
Always check with the experts - and it will save you alot of time and effort.

Next time, please provide more info from your end - so you can get a more precise answer.

It depends on where you live. It is never too late to start preparing your garden for next season - clearing grass, turning soil, adding organic matter. You can plant bulbs, mums, and other plants now. Check out http://www.gardenweb.com/ for everything you need to know about gardening.

Its never too late. You can start preparing your beds for next spring, plant some fall crops, or plant perreniels. Depending on what zone you are in there may be a lot of things you can plant now.

do note i am from Canada - Mums are good to buy this time a year, and they will come back next year. Also Sedum (or Autumn Splendor) bloom this time of year so maybe someone could Share one with you, if you know someone who has them, otherwise plant them in the spring.... also bulbs can go in this time of year for just about anything for next year.

Best of luck

If you are way down south in the USA it is not a problem. Otherwise all you can do is plant stuff that will comeup next year (perennials).
