As you drive into Mexico your car will activate a green light or a red light, if the light is red you will drive to a secondary inspection, the officials are very polite and if you have no contraband (such a guns) you will be quickly waved though. If the light is green just keep driving. As an American you will need no documentation to enter Mexican border cities. If you drive though Tijuana, about 25 miles to the south you will encounter the beach community of Rosarito, home to about 25,000 Americans. You will feel at home. (take the Ensenada Cuota exit) Remember, when in Mexico don't do anything you wouldn't do at home.
The drive back into the USA is a long wait and a little tedious, but since you are an American, a drivers license will be more than sufficient to identify yourself.

Well these days there can be big delays. If you are an American always carry your passport. A birth cirtif. would still get you in, but you may experience delays with it. Thats all you really need. One word of advice on Mexican border officals. They all try to act like tough guys. Kiss their a-s, tell them you are looking forward to seeing their great country and you will get through with a nice wave or so. If you act suspicous in anyway, or are not friendly with them, they have no problems with pulling you aside and searching your car just to delay you. If you are mexican coming to America you will need your visa and passport.

Go with the green light and you won't be stopped by Mexican officials unless you are bringing in new appliances. Behave as if you were in your own country and you'll be fine. Make sure if you are from another country than the US or Canada that your papers are in order, the US border officials will want to look at them.
