I´ve often wondered that myself. I dont really get it either, its like..if you find love, you´re the happiest person in the world, and if you dont you´ll always feel somethin missin in your life, even if you are happy with everythin about your life. And as far as ensurin the survival of the species, i think sex makin people feel good would ensure that all on its own. So..i dont know where love actually fits into the whole scheme of things...maybe its a gift...like life is, most of the time it can suck, but durin the times it doesnt suck, its the best thing ever. But i dunno, this is just my opinion, i havent really got it figured out myself yet. Really interesting question, though. :)

no love is not a con to ensure the survival of a species, Sex is. Love is what makes us different from most species on the planet, so maybe the survival clock we have built in. Is not one that tels us to be the strongest the fastest. maybe we miss reading the clock, maybe it's the fact we are capable of love is our survival natures way, just maybe it.s not meant to be the one with the biggest stick and Strong is meant to survive. maybe its the one with nothing more than the love in there heart for someone survives, because when you are loved you are not alone
you out number the one with the stick 2 to 1 .
no love is a necessary requirement for the survival of mankind without it we are just animals and lost

Does love need a purpose?
aside from that question I would say that love is the strongest bond one human can feel towards another. I'm not just talking about sexual (Eros) love, but also about love between friends and family. Obviously this bond serves a purpose in helping us to survive, but I don't think that in anyway devalues it.

The entire idea of romantic love is only about 150 years old. This is a very short time in the history of human development. But mate selection and pair bonding has been around for a long time, obviously.

If love were only for the propagation of the species, then why do gay people fall in love?

If love were a cruel trick, then why would people who had been "tricked" once pursue it again?

No....Love offers much to us as individuals as well as to the species:

Falling in love, when it's requited, is the surest way to stay connected to another human being in spite of our faults, to keep one another alive and well-fed, to have ready access to sex without ongoing competition, and to provide a stable and focused life.

Love helps people bridge the initial mistrust, allowing us to cling to one another even as we are only becoming acquainted. And love maintains that connection even when illness makes it burdensome.

Love draws out the best from within us, making us rise to the occasion, to be worthy of the admiration shown to us. And love helps us to forgive, to solve problems as a team, to value a tandem existence in spite of the lost possibilities.

Love has been turned into sappy poetry and schmaltzy Hallmark cards, but at its core, love helps create meaning in a life that offers few positive reference points.

You're asking a question that will no doubt be answered by mostly people who are depressed. I'm sure the answers you will receive will 90% of the time be ones that say things to the affect of love being cruel. Of course, these are the answers one would simply ignore, because such responses wouldn't satisfy you would they?

I think the real question you need to ask yourself is, "How do I define love?" Once you have an answer for that, send it to me in an email, and then I'll give you the real philosophical answer you're looking for.

someone once wrote that "Love is a cruel trick played on us to ensure the propagation of the species"

Yup, that's all there is to it. Romeo & Juliet stuff is a descent into neurotic attachment, with a liberal serving of hysteria. Passionate love mellows into loyalty and affectionate regard.

Does it have to serve a purpose???

love - well it keeps us from being alone, makes those long winters nights warm and snuggly, and ensures you have someone to grow old with!
