Four or five years ago, California threatened to do just this. They already have a strong economic base and self-governance. It is a large populated state that is culturally diverse and have many ties with foreign commodities and exchange.
They are located on a sea coast so their import / export trade would continue to thrive without the influence or need of a federal government and its federal regulations.
California does have a high population of Mexican immigrants (legal and illegal) and the Baha is a viable route for further trade and exchange between California and Mexico.
However, Wisconsin is the only state in the US that has already set up a devolved governmental system within the entire state. (check Wikipedia)The state itself is set up more like the English parliament. Each city within Wisconsin has its own set of bylaws and regulations that it adheres to.
Also, Wisconsin is placed right between Canada and (if it were a separate nation) the United States. It also has a shipping port with the route coming in from the Atlantic. I am unsure of its current economic status and whether it would be a viable option for Wisconsin to become its own sovereignty, but it has all the means for trade that a small country would require.
So IF the United States were to ever break up, then I would say that California would certainly be the first and the most likely to survive as its own sovereign entity.

I doubt the US will ever break up. The only time that was ever tried led to a Civil War and I am sure no one wants to repeat that experience. It is tough to say which state would leave first. California is apparently going to fall off into the ocean so I don't know if that counts or not. However, I would have to say it would be the area with the most liberals. After all, they are the ones who hate the rest of the States so much.

There is no provision in the Constitution for a state to secede, and following the Civil War it has been the de facto rule that it is illegal to secede. Attempting to do so is treason, and inciting others to do so is sedition. Both acts carry the death penalty, though that is rarely applied.
That said, no nation has survived forever unchanged, so it might be possible that the US will breakup in the future. If it did so, the circumstances surrounding it would have to be fairly traumatic, including a total or near-total collapse of the Federal government and many or most businesses. At that point, it would be more likely not for any one state to secede, but for groups of states to form smaller regional governments, with the exception of certain large states like California and Texas* (both of which were seperate nations at one point, but now are just states with no special rights or privledges over any others).
*Someone else posted that Texas is a seperate nation. This is patently and demonstrably false. The US flag flies over Texas, Texas sends Senators to Washington (only states may do that, not terrorities, and certainly not foreign nations), and after the Civil War, when Texas rejoined the Union, no special privledges were granted to the state. Any special rights Texas once possesssed were lost when the state seceded and joined the traitors in the Confederacy.

At present no. I can see some conditions that would lead to that. If the bill of rights and the constitution keep being watered down then you would see Vermont leave. My state has a built in escape clause in it's constitution Texas is the only other state to have such a clause but I doubt they will bail there just too conservative they don't seem to mind there rights drifting away one by one. So if the conservatives keep on this Nazi like crusade to dump everyones rights for the illusion of security than you'll see a new us flag one with a few stars missing.

The only thing that needs breaking up is your form of Government and Fascist Capitalism working the public over like a herd of Animals! So the state of phony representative government and fascist capitalism needs to leave first or be effectively removed by the will of the majority of legal citizen's....

The united states won't break up. We of course would like to set California adrift at times, but don't see us breaking up.
