Hi there...
An ant if seperated from its colony, it wll try to join back agai.
Ants secrete a chemical which is used by other ants to recognise the path used...
This is how ant go far away in search of food and do not loose the path...
Hope this answers ur query...

I hope it kills itself to be honest but it probably won't.
I'd expect that it would try to find it's way back home but I suspect that it would actually get killed/eaten on it's way.
If I was an ant, I'd live near a train line so that I could find that train line again and then get back ... maybe by hanging on to the train and jumping off close to home.
Interesting question.
:-)

actually, i believe they die out rather rapidly. i recently moved about 350 miles. there were ants in one of my boxes. LOTS of ants, but no discernable queen. i opened the box and left it outside, ants crawling EVERYWHERE in my driveway. five hours later, all the ants were still there, but they were all dead. it was like a scene from saving private ryan... little ant bodies everywhere. this leads me to believe that if seperated from the queen by a large distance, a population of ants will very rapidly become seperated (as when i opened the box) and die out (as a few hours later) to fade away into the strands of eternity (as when i hosed my driveway down to get rid of the dead ants)

Ants form tight family groups, each member has its own recognizable signature. If seperated from its colony, it will not join another, if it enters the range of another colony, it will probably be killed and carted back to their colony as food.

I think other groups won't allow it to join them. Somehow it should be able to get back. If it can't get back it will die searching for it's own group.

No, it is either killed or it finds its way back.
