So therefore, I can't reach in the front of the hood and press the latch to open it. It sounds like the cable is still attached at the lever under the dash, and it may be broken towards the front of the car. I guess I need to remove the plastic grill on the front for starters. I realize I could drive down to my friendly local Saab service center. However, I'd rather not part with half my life savings to get the hood of my car open. And yes, the next time I buy a car, I'll remember not to get a Saab.

The latch may be stuck. Start over. Press down on the front of the hood until it is completely closed. Then try to pop the hood open, again.

If you cannot get the hood open, go to your local gas station where you are a frequent customer and let him pop the hood open for you. If you are a frequent customer, you shouldn't be charged anything. It's not a difficult matter.

Or you could buy some gas and ask the attendant to check your oil. At which time, you'll need to pop the hood and the attendant should be able to assist you. It shouldn't cost you anything to have the hood popped. at which time you could ask what is wrong with not being able to open the hood.

If you can get the grill out, it'll be easy because then you'll find the device that holds the hood down. You'll see the hood cable and all you have to do is pull on it and the hood will pop open.

If you can't get the grill off, then you can do the operation, but you'll need someone to reach underneath the bumper and pull his arm all the way up, find the cable and pull on it.

Don't worry, it works. I did the same thing on my Nissan, and although our cars may not be the same make, virtually all cars use the same system.

Good luck!
