It's about time that Americans accepted the fact that we cannot live in today's world without a large and powerful military force.
The two oceans that once gave us a sense of security now are small ponds that can be crossed in a few hours.
On all sides there are nations that are snapping at our heels, and some are already sending infiltrators to surreptitiously set up landing sites and ammo dumps in our country. They may even be mining special roads and bridges and other critical spots.
We don't need a military draft, we need to have a permanent military force exceeding 2 million men and we need to treat it like we treat our firemen, town and city police and state police: as a critical part of what we are.

Just getting the government to allow a draft would take a long time. If things get that to the point where a draft is needed WW III has just broke out, and most of US troops are already dead! Do you even know the size of the combined branches? Navy, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, National Guard and all the reserves. Before the government forces civilians to go they will activate all the reserve units and reactivate all the inactive reserves (inactive reserves means you are done with your time, but if needed you can be called back. example Marines sign an 8 year contract-4 active and 4 inactive). Civilians will be the last asked to go. And civilian women will be the very last asked, if they are even asked. The US military is very large and has very well trained service member. Not to mention the abundance of equipment and technology. So if there is a draft the whole world is in trouble.
jayqualtieri-President Bush is just waiting for his office term to run out? You mean like the President before him. Who also helped the terrorist gain their power. Who didn't feel Osama was such a threat.
imaginer-Why would the poor and the blacks go first? So you feel that poors lives are viewed with less value so it's okay if they die? And why blacks? Once again do feel they are of less value? If a draft comes it isn't going to matter what social or racial bracket you come from.

I doubt that you will see a draft again. Too bad I think everybody should have to serve their country, at least a mandatory boot camp to instill a little discipline and insight to today's kids that do not have a clue. I do not want to see a mass draft for war time reasons, in fact I dislike the idea because there is noting worse than having somebody that does not want to be there covering your back. This would put our real troops in danger. as far as the comment above about Bush, well I do not believe too many politic ans kids go into service wheat her it be a Dem or Rep. The freedom we have is built on the backs of the common man.

I don't think there will be a resumption. The military is much better off having people in its ranks who want to be there rather than those who are conscripted to be there.
I think those politicians (mostly Democrats) who want to reimpose the draft know that it would fundamentally alter the military, I think for the worse.

why will there be a draft? Is there another war out there looming that I don't know about? They have recalled some marines that were in the inactive reserves already. When there is a draft, you will know about it, and it will probably be the 18-21 yr olds that go first.

With the 14th Amendment of USA Constitution the Draft is illegal (unlawful). But because WWII was hyped as good against evil the people were eager to fight....If you do not know your rights, no one else will remind you and others will use your ignorance against you....

The draft won't be reinstated for a long time to come unless some great catastrophe happens.

Footballfan gets it. Bush built support for this war by asking no sacrifice whatsoever on the part of the American people. Bush would be impeached if he called for a draft. He is just counting on running out the clock on Iraq and dumping it on the next President.

There might be, but that would be political suicide for the Reps. So instead they try illegal scams on the men already in the service. Like making them do much more than what they signed up for.
The poor and the blacks would go first, the politition's sons would never have to go.

I;m sure it would be a last ditch effort, but if it happens it would effect everyone 18 to 30 and I;m guessing it would go back to the rules that use to apply.
