When Rasmus Lerdorf released the first PHP, it was a Perl script called Professional Home Page (in fact, Rasmus used it on his home page to track visitors). Since then, PHP was re-written in C and came to mean "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor" (it's a recursive acronym along the lines of "GNU's Not Unix").
