You may be right but then again, he may just be going through a growth spurt and sleeping kinda goes with the territory. Doctors recommend 8 hours of sleep at that age btw.

Parents sometime feel that kids have to be as active as they are. I'm not criticizing...just saying maybe there's a good reason for it.

Jeez, I hope you don't listen to some of these idiots. Your son doesn't need a doctor and there's no evidence to suggest he's on drugs based on what you said.

It's perfectly normal for teens to sleep a LOT. 10-15 hours is not at all unusual. They'll even out again in their 20's, don't worry. The WORST thing you can do is make this hard for him. Give him the extra time and understand that his body is changing at a rapid rate and will continue to do so for the next several years. Don't complicate an already difficult time with accusations of drugs or laziness, that would be a serious mistake that could lead to him actually experimenting with drugs.

Just relax, he's fine.

I have a fifteen year old brother going through the same thing. Not only does he sleep a lot but has a hard time going to bed. It usually takes him 2 hours before falling asleep. It is a proven medical fact (you could try looking it up) that it has something to do with the hormones within their body. ALL teenagers go through it.
Some more than others. You just have to try to get them to stick to a certain bedtime/wakeup routine, 10 to 1 they need the sleep. Teenagers have lots of pressures to deal with on top of their forever changing hormones. It's totally natural. But other things like depression or drugs might also be another scenerio. My advice take him for a physical.

Contrary to what some others here said, this is not normal. There are many factors and while pot is a possibility, it could also be nutrition. Also making him get up off his butt and get outside and get excersize will invigorate his body and wake him up. Depression ? Possibility, but that is a symptom. The cause is sitting on his butt and not doing anything. Eventually, the more you excercise and are more active, the more your body craves to be active. Hikes in the woods, riding a bike, going outside and palying with a dog, going to a gym, or a chuch basket ball court, There are numerous things. But you as the parent have to be the one to force him. It should not be left up to him to decide for himself. That is your job as a parent. While you are at it a good vitamin supplament is advisable. Organic vitamins are the best way to go. Purity vitamins are an excellent source. That is what I use. And you can find them on the web. Talk to him. Ask him what is going on. (calmly ) As far as it being " normal" for a teen his age, no it is NOT normal. It is normal for a teen to be outside breathing fresh air. Yes , kids do sleep more tham adults, but not 15 hours, That is absurd. I can see 10 or 11 hours, but that is it. It sounds like he is just tired from being inactive. The more you lay around the more your body atrophies, and then this will cause more sleep and it becomes a vicious cycle. You as a parent can and should get him off his butt. This is no good. These are his formative years. It is extremely important for excersize at his age.

My son is turning 15 in a month. He sleeps alot. He is also involved in football, we have been to the doctor and he is normal. Some kids sleep alot. Does he have a TV in his room? Does he play on the computer or video games after everyone else has gone to bed? Also normal, you may want to have hims cut back since school is starting soon.

He might be naturally lazy and a couch potato, I'm no doctor, but he might have depression and doesn't want to do anything. Maybe something's wrong at school with girls or something that is bothering him that is making him feel very down so he sleeps and is lazy.

he is a teenager!!

My 14 yr can sleep from 8pm to 8am without so much as a blink.
He takes cat naps after school too.

Too much sleep by adult standards is not enough for growing teens. Studies have shown that physiological development requires the body to be in a resting state more often.

Believe me I do understand the frustration, but it's important to not get in a battle about it.

NORMAL!!!

Normal teenagers require more sleep then adults. the body and mind are developing at very fast rates. Sleep is the one thing the body does to allow the body to grow.. It is not only normal it is important.

I think that's normal because mine is pretty much the same way, he is really healthy and eats well, but just loves to sleep. Mine loves tummy time, and at night he sleeps from 10 or so until 7 or 8 in the morning. try not to worry so much, i think he's fine

What is a lot? Teens need 9-10 hours a sleep a night.

If he is sleeping more than that (and you are sure he is really sleeping) he may be depressed or on drugs. Take him to a Dr.
