the animals in my community are not electrocuted when they are slaughtered; this would be a very inefficient method of slaughter. They are either bled or shot through the head with a bolt. An animal killed in an abattoir definitely knows it is not in a safe environment. I have seen animals break bones trying to escape from containment and shutes. It is a terrible thing to experience.

Some animals do know.
They smell the blood , even if there is old blood from a previous slaughter.
It affects them, and some cattle species like the Brahman go crazy at the smell of blood.
They can jump six foot fences, and make general amoc when they go crazy, especially the bulls.
So i know some animals know ...
That is also why a judas goat is used to lead animals that are going to be slaughtered.

I know that in cattle slaughter houses great care is taken to keep the cows at the back of the line from detecting what is happening to the cow at the front of the line. The lead cow is killed by a head blow from a very heavy sledgehammer. This is a quiet method, which again suggests that the slaughter houses have noticed the cows get jumpy. Also they pipe in muzak to keep them calm.
Actually, but this was the original purpose of muzak... but it was discovered that people also were calmed by the syrupy phony music, and they started using it in supermarkets and waiting rooms.

I don't know of a definite real answer
But I believe that they can smell the blood and the fear of the others in front of them and that may cause panic.
Survival instinct may tell them to run but when their in a slaughter house and lined up with no front or back to go, all they can do is panic and...wait.

I had a friend from Jamaca who said when the first pig of a group was slaughtered on his friend's farm, the others would hear the screaming and go nuts. Pigs are very smart, have even been taught to play video games, etc. I dont eat pigs.

Yes ,they do know.If u r kept somewhere with no freedom & suddenly u hear ur friend screaming in pain and never reterns. One by one this happens to each one who becomes ur friend for moments. Then u think u may be next to disappear.
Till this happens to Animals this is very intrusting Question & when it happens to Human beings its a HUMAN RIGHT VIOLATION.
But fortunately I am non vegitarian person.

Yes....Animals have strong life instincts. They were aware of the tsunami events long before humans.
