Many posters have said it is in the bone marrow. This is only partly true. While it is true that all the cell lines progenitors of RBC,WBC, and platelets are made there, the cells would be useless without the water and proteins that these cells are suspended in. Blood is mostly water (approx 55% IIRC). The proteins are synthesized in the liver and the water comes fron the digestive system.

As a child, your body not only needs to perform the thousands of tiny daily repairs that we all need, but you're growing as well. Your stem cells are constantly creating red cells, white cells, etc. you need to survive, and they reside within all bone marrow as you grow.
When you get older, say about 18, your long bones stop producing red blood cells and the task relies solely on your flat bones, like your scapula and pelvic bones.
This is why it is so bad for old people to fall and break a hip. Not only are their bones usualy brittle, but it destroys the "factory" responsible for repairing the damage.
