It means what you don't know won't hurt you.
(For example: Your grandmother dies but nobody tells you about it for a month. Obviously you don't know about it so you're not sad. You're ignorant to the fact that she died, and you're fine.)

Why do people rent stupidity? Because ignorance is bliss.
All truths are built on truths which define logic. In order to maintain the structure of logic all aspects of a given notion are required to support previously determined truths. It's really a lot more complicated than it seems. In short, the more one knows, or losses their ignorance, the more one becomes aware of how truly ignorant they are.
This epiphany is not reached prior to many exhaustive years of struggling to keep the absurd separate from the logical while denying the fragility and venerability of reality.
In light of this knowledge, a wise man came to the conclusion that one may be better off living in ignorance than in fretting his life in some supposed logical structured thought process which mocked the existence of ignorance with the illusion of intelligence.
In summary, you were better off not asking your question, or finding the answer than, you are now, because you now have yet another "truth" to try to fit in to your structured perception of reality.
When dreams are shattered, betrayals of trust, when the fallibility of the infallible occurs, some remark that ignorance is bliss because knowledge can be painful when reality isn't they way you perceived it was.

Have you ever been happy and content until someone tells you some 'bad' news? Well there are times when ignorance is bliss because in certain situations a person is happy not knowing the truth.

It means that to not know about something is sometimes better than knowing.
A married man who believes his marriage and his wife are perfect in every way. Reality, his wife is cheating on him but he doesn't know it. Ignorance is bliss.

As long as you don't know something (remain ignorant) than you will not be responsible for that knowledge. Remaining ingnorant is one to escape being responsible.
